Innovation, Trade and Rural Development March 20, 2008 Eleven Companies Attend Toronto Food and Beverage Show Eleven companies in Newfoundland and Labradors food and beverage sector attended the recent Canadian Food and Beverage Show in Toronto. The delegation was led by the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "Helping companies become exporters is a major objective of my department," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation Trade and Rural Development. "We have a growing beverage and food industry and the Canadian Food and Beverage Show attracts international buyers which makes it a valuable resource for companies wishing to extend their markets into Canada and beyond." More than 1,600 companies exhibited at the show which drew an estimated 20,000 visitors. Seven of the 11 delegate companies exhibited in the Newfoundland and Labrador pavilion, while four companies attended the show to gather market intelligence. "Participating at this show is a must if you want to find new distributors and representatives for your product" said Henry Cowan, President of Dockside Appetizers. "This was a very good show for us and we appreciate the effort the department put into helping us participate in this worthwhile event." The department, in cooperation with MUN Alumni Affairs, hosted a networking reception at the show. Guests included MUN alumni, Newfoundland and Labrador companies, and well-known Newfoundland and Labrador entertainers Seamus ORegan and Kim Stockwood. The reception allowed Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and others with an affinity for the province to meet, and for companies to pursue business opportunities. The reception was also part of the Provinces Ambassador Program which aims to engage key individuals who are interested in helping to promote the positive attributes of the province. Newfoundland and Labradors food and beverage sector has approximately 150 companies distributed throughout the province. Most operations have between 18 and 24 employees and total industry employment is approximately 1,800. The food and beverage sector (excluding seafood) contributes $400 million annually to the provincial economy. The Ambassador Newfoundland and Labrador Program is a communications initiative that maintains a network of local, national and international contacts whose purpose is to foster positive attitudes about the accomplishments and abilities of the people and businesses of Newfoundland and Labrador. It publishes a newsletter, Ambassador Newfoundland and Labrador. -30- Media contact: Scott Barfoot
