Province Launches Employers Guide to Hiring Immigrants and International Students

In an effort to further assist employers in Newfoundland and Labrador prepare for a prosperous future, the Provincial Government is now providing a new Employers Guide to Hiring Immigrants and International Students.

The new guide is an initiative of the Provincial Immigration Strategy and a Labour Market Integration Project, funded by the Labour Market Development Agreement of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. The guide will help employers understand what is involved in hiring immigrants and international students. The guide is available online at //www.hrle.gov.nl.ca/hrle/immigration/english/new.htm and will be available at all Human Resource, Labour and Employment offices across the province and provided to various stakeholder groups.

"Employers who are interested in hiring immigrants and international students will now have a resource that will assist them through the process," said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. "Immigrants often have particular skill sets that are not available in the local labour market, and employers would like to avail of expertise that exists in other areas of the world."

"This resource is very timely and will be appreciated by employers," said Marilyn Tucker, Director, Business Coalition. "The employers' guide will be extremely valuable to employers who wish to recruit international talent, and government is to be commended on this initiative."

The Provincial Immigration Strategy, launched in April 2007, aims to triple the number of immigrants to the province from a previous average of 450 annually to between 1,200 and 1,500 annually within five years.

"This guide will help to dispel the myth that it is difficult to hire international skilled workers and students," said Minister Sullivan. "With the help of the guide and the expertise that now exists in the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism, employers will be able to attract new talent from outside Canada when they are unable to find particular skill sets among the local population and have not been successful in repatriation efforts."

To date the Provincial Government has committed $6 million over three years for the provincial immigration strategy.
