Government Provides Funding for Youth Centres

The Provincial Government is furthering its commitment to enhancing the lives of young people through continued investment in youth centres located across the province. The government is providing $63,300 in funding to centres located in Placentia-Dunville, Labrador City, Wabush, Englee, Marys Harbour and Corner Brook.

"Our government recognizes the significant role youth centres play in our communities," said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. "These centres provide a place for our youth to participate in programs that promote positive, healthy attitudes and assist in achieving personal self-reliance. Communities can thrive when our youth are supported and provided with the opportunity to succeed."

Youth centres are run by volunteer boards of directors, volunteers and a small number of paid staff who offer programs and services and facilities aimed at young people between the ages of five and 20. Youth can participate in various programs which include wellness, fitness, awareness and prevention programs targeting violence, crime and drug use.

This year, the Provincial Government is providing $4.2 million in funding for community-based youth agencies and programs across the province. This includes approximately $2.5 million for the Community Youth Network, $1.1 million for grants to youth organizations and $560,000 to support other youth related programs across the province.
