Public Advisory: Shops Closing Holidays, 2009

The public is advised that the following days are to be observed as holidays during the 2009 calendar year. These are noted under the authority and provisions of The Shop Closing Act.

Good Friday* Friday, April 10, 2009
Easter Sunday Sunday, April 12, 2009
Victoria Day Monday, May 18, 2009
Memorial/Canada Day* Wednesday, July 1, 2009
Labour Day* Monday, September 7, 2009
Thanksgiving Day Monday, October 12, 2009
Remembrance Day* Wednesday, November 11, 2009
Christmas Day* Friday, December 25, 2009
Boxing Day Saturday, December 26, 2009

*Six paid holidays

In addition to the foregoing holidays, The Shops Closing Act sets for observance as holidays, the following:

  • In the City of St. John�s the day determined as Regatta Day;
  • In the Town of Harbour Grace, the day determined as Regatta Day; and
  • In any other municipality, the day fixed by the council as a public holiday therein.

    • The Shops Closing Act requires that all shops, other than those defined as exempt shops, be closed on the above holidays. For further information, please call 709-729-2742, toll-free 1-877-563-1063 or e-mail kclements@gov.nl.ca.
