Adverse Health Events Report Received by Provincial Government

Ensuring the best possible policies and procedures are in place for managing adverse events within the health and community services system is an important priority for the Provincial Government, said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Health and Community Services, today when he announced that government has received the report from the Task Force on Adverse Health Events.

On May 30, 2007, the Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced the appointment of Robert Thompson as Secretary to Cabinet for the Management of Health Issues, which included the chairing of the Task Force on Adverse Health Events. While this appointment occurred just after the announcement of the Commission of Inquiry on Hormone Receptor Testing, the mandate of the task force did not include an assessment of the issues related specifically to problems with estrogen and progesterone receptor (ER/PR) testing. The task force examined how the provinces health system identifies and responds to various types of adverse events which may impact patients. Its mandate also included examining best practices in other jurisdictions and making recommendations to the Provincial Government.

"I am very pleased that the efforts of the task force have now culminated in this report," said Minister Wiseman. "This is a substantial body of work that involved the gathering of input from health care professionals, managers, patients and patient advocacy groups. I extend my sincere appreciation to all who took part and provided valuable input."

The report will be examined thoroughly by the Provincial Government, including its 41 recommendations on how to improve the way in which the health care system responds when adverse events happen.

"Our government is committed to a strong and effective health and community services system that responds appropriately to the health needs of the people of our province," added Minister Wiseman. "I look forward to examining each and every recommendation of this report and anticipate that the work of the task force will prove very beneficial as we implement change to strengthen the ways in which our system responds when adverse events occur."
