Residents Reminded to Check Expiry of MCP Cards

The Provincial Government is reminding residents to check their new MCP cards for the expiry date to ensure their cards are renewed prior to that date. All MCP cards issued since May 2007 will expire at different times, ranging from one to five years. Staggering the expiration dates will help ensure a smooth renewal process while allowing the information in the MCP database to be updated at regular intervals.

"It is important that residents check the expiry date on their cards and look for a renewal notice in the mail," said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Health and Community Services. "As well, we remind residents to contact the MCP office with any change in address. This will help make certain that individuals receive their new cards in a timely manner."

Renewal notices will be mailed to residents approximately 90 days in advance of cards expiring. Upon receipt, residents are required to confirm by mail that their information held within the MCP database is still current or needs to be changed. New cards will then be issued which will be laser-printed with a larger font for improved readability.

"Concerns were voiced to us about the readability of the print on the card and we made some changes based on that feedback," said Minister Wiseman. "The re-registration initiative last year was a significant undertaking and was successful in large part due to the participation of our residents in the process. I encourage residents to likewise help ensure a smooth process in renewing their MCP cards by responding promptly to renewal notices."

Notification has been sent as well to health care providers in Newfoundland and Labrador and to other provinces and territories to ensure that they recognize both MCP card designs as valid and to continue to check expiration dates.

Questions on renewing an MCP card can be directed to the MCP office by calling 1-866-449-4459 on the Avalon Peninsula or 1-800-563-1557 in all other areas or by e-mail at mcpregistration@gov.nl.ca. Further information is also available at www.gov.nl.ca/mcp.
