Customers Should Learn about Refund Policies When Christmas Shopping

As Christmas shoppers look for the perfect gift for their loved ones, they need to remember to ask stores about their refund policies. These policies vary from store to store and consumers need to know what they are upfront in case they need to return gifts. The Trade Practices Division of the Department of Government Services receives many inquiries about refunds at Christmas time.

"Many stores will not issue an automatic refund and some will only offer store credit which is why consumers need to ask at point of purchase what refund policies are in effect," said the Honourable Kevin OBrien, Minister of Government Services. "Stores are free to set their own refund policies. Consumers should also be aware of any signage in the store which indicates that sales may be final."

Some of the common options stores offer for refunds are a money back guarantee if consumers are not satisfied with a particular product or an exchange or credit note. Some stores, in particular specialty shops, have a "no refund" policy. Stores which offer money back guarantees usually apply certain restrictions such as proof of purchase, time limits and returning the item in the original packaging.

Another tip consumers should keep in mind is gifts purchased at full price that are later subject to a discount event, may only be refunded at the discount price if the consumer no longer has a receipt.

"This is why I encourage everyone to keep all Christmas receipts and put them in a safe place. In addition, consumers should ensure that the merchandise they are buying is in good condition and works properly before finalizing the sale," said Minister OBrien.

Consumers who are unsure of their rights should contact the Trade Practices Division at 709-729-2599 or toll-free at 1-877-968-2600.
