Roofing Company Sentenced in Provincial Court The Department of Government Services announced today that TJs Roofing Limited of Mount Pearl was sentenced in St. Johns Provincial Court on November 3, 2008 upon pleading guilty to one violation of the Occupational Health and Regulations. Two charges were laid in June 2008 as a result of an investigation carried out by the Occupational Health and Safety Division. In December 2006, an inspection conducted by an officer of the Occupational Health and Safety Division determined that employees were working on the roof of a housing construction project in St. Johns without the use of proper fall protection, thereby violating regulation. There was no accident or worker injury involved. The company was fined $2,000 on the charge of violating the fall protection regulation, with a victim fine surcharge of $300 also being applied. In addition, the company was ordered to fund a fall protection training course and ensure that its workers participate. The remaining charge, relating to the employer's failure to provide and maintain a workplace and the necessary equipment, systems and tools that are safe and without risk to the health of its workers, was withdrawn. - 30 - Media contact: 2008 11 10 9:05 a.m. |
