Occupational Health and Safety Charges Laid Against Two Companies

The Department of Government Services announced today that two companies have been charged with alleged violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. The charges against both companies arose from an accident which occurred in August 2006 that resulted in serious injuries to one worker.

Weirs Construction Limited and Triple J Aggregates Limited are alleged to have violated legislation that requires a piece of equipment to be regularly inspected and adequately maintained; maintenance to be prohibited when contact with moving parts could injure workers; and, appropriate instruction and supervision to be provided to workers for their protection.

The first appearance for both companies is scheduled for August 28, 2008, at St. Johns Provincial Court.

The charges are the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch of the Department of Government Services.
