Charges Laid Resulting from Blasting Incident in Wabush

The Department of Government Services announced today that Wabush Mines has been charged with alleged violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act in relation to a blasting incident that occurred in February of 2006.

Two employees working for a contractor on the site were exposed to excessive flyrock which was produced when a scheduled blast took place. While there were no injuries reported, considerable physical damage to buildings and equipment occurred. The charges are the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch.

The company has been charged with two violations under the act which relate generally to its failure as an employer to provide the instruction and supervision necessary to prevent over-drilling and over-loading of blast holes, and its failure to protect the contracted workers from the hazards presented by the blast.

The first appearance for the company is scheduled for March 18, 2008 at Provincial Court in Wabush.
