Member Appointed to the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the appointment of Reg Anstey as a part-time provincial member of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB).

Mr. Ansteys appointment, effective today, is for a six-year term.

"During his more than 30-year remarkable career in the labour sector, Mr. Anstey was involved in many aspects of industry and provided leadership in many tangible ways," said Premier Williams. "He has also served as a member of public sector boards and committees, including the Provincial Council of the Rural Secretariat, the 2005 Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Review Committee, and the Strategic Partnership Initiative. His active engagement in the economic and social growth of our province has always been strong, and I look forward to his contribution as a member of the C-NLOPB."

Mr. Anstey recently retired as President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour, a position he held for more than five years. Prior to that, he was Secretary-Treasurer of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union.

He helped with the creation of One Ocean, a liaison organization established by the fishing and petroleum industries. He has also served as Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress, chair of the board of the GrowthWorks Atlantic Venture Fund Ltd., and board member of the Advisory Board of Memorial Universitys Leslie Harris Centre.

Mr. Ansteys many other accomplishments included involvement at the international level. From 2002 to 2007 he was the representative for Canada at the International Labour Organization of the United Nations. During that time he served on a sub-committee of the UN General Assembly and represented North and South America on a Team of Experts for a process that led to a 2007 UN agreement on working conditions for fish harvesters.

The C-NLOPB was established in 1986 through the Atlantic Accord for the purpose of regulating the oil and gas industry offshore Newfoundland and Labrador. The seven-member board comprises three members appointed by the Federal Government, three appointed by the Provincial Government, and a Chair and CEO who is appointed jointly by the two governments.
