Premier Receives Letter from Stphane
Dion
The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, released a letter from Liberal Party of Canada Leader Stphane Dion, which was received today. The letter responds to Premier Williams letters of September 9, 2008, which requested policy positions of the Conservative, Liberal and NDP federal leaders in the context of the federal election. The questions concentrated specifically on issues of importance to the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
"I am pleased to now have responses from both Mr. Dion
and Mr. Layton," said Premier Williams. "These letters are important to
voters in this province as we approach Election Day, and will assist the
electorate in making informed choices. It is unfortunate that Mr. Harper
has not yet responded, yet given his lack of credibility on keeping
written promises it is not surprising. I urge Canadians to continue to
be very wary of electing Conservative candidates."
The Premier said both letters from Mr. Dion and Mr.
Layton contain many commitments and initiatives that are very positive
for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
"Mr. Dions statement that we cannot work together
without trust gave me great comfort, as I have always said that I much
prefer a leader who has integrity and can be trusted than a leader who
makes meaningless promises just to win votes," said Premier Williams. "I
encourage Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to review these letters and
talk to candidates about their partys position. I especially urge
voters to ask Conservative candidates to explain why Mr. Harper deserves
the votes of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. With just over a week
left to go, we have no letter from Mr. Harper and Canadians have been
given no opportunity to see his full party platform upon which he should
be tested in two national debates. Canadians deserve to know where this
Conservative Party stands as they seek their majority government."
