Province Mourns the Passing of Jack Byrne, Member of the House of Assembly for the district of Cape St. Francis

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today expressed the provinces deepest sympathy and sorrow in the passing of Jack Byrne, Progressive Conservative Member of the House of Assembly for the district of Cape St. Francis.

"Jack Byrne was one of the most well liked and highly respected MHAs on the floor of the House of Assembly; and is regarded as one of the true veterans of legislative service in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Premier Williams. "During debates in the House of Assembly, whether in opposition or government, Jack has always been one of the best. His convincing way with words and his dry wit were unsurpassed. Jacks powerful ability to debate effectively was inspiring to watch. His contributions in his professional life were invaluable, as he worked to improve the lives of the people he served. Above all, he was a beloved family man whose proudest accomplishment was his wonderful family."

Jack Byrne was a veteran politician who began his political career in 1986 as the Mayor for the Town of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove. After serving seven years in municipal politics, on May 3, 1993 Jack was elected the Member of the House of Assembly for the District of St. Johns East Extern. During 1993 and 1995, he served in the PC Caucus as the Critic for the Department of Environment and Lands, and in 1995 was appointed Critic for the Department of Works, Services and Transportation.

On February 22, 1996, he was re-elected to represent the newly-named District of Cape St. Francis. He served as Critic for the portfolios of Works, Services and Transportation, Government Services and Lands, Municipal and Provincial Affairs, and Intergovernmental Affairs. He also served as a Member of the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Assembly, the bipartisan committee of the Legislature charged with examining the finances of the provincial government and its agencies.

Re-elected as MHA for Cape St. Francis on February 9, 1999, Jack served as the Chair of the Public Accounts Committee and a Member of the Caucus Strategy Committee. Jack also served as Opposition Critic for the portfolios of Finance, Health, Labour, and Works, Services and Transportation.

Jack was once again re-elected as MHA for Cape St. Francis on October 21, 2003. In November 2003, he was appointed Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs and the Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing. Most recently in the October 9, 2007 provincial general election, Jack was re-elected by his loyal constituents and appointed Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly on October 30th.

"Jack has created a lasting legacy through his dedication and commitment to his constituents and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Premier Williams. "He will always be remembered as one of the most outstanding MHAs to serve in this province. On behalf of the Provincial Government and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, I want to extend our sincerest and heartfelt condolences to his wide circle of family and friends. In particular, to his devoted and loving wife, Bridget and son, Matthew. This is indeed a very sad day for our province as we mourn the loss of this extraordinary individual and friend."

Flags at all Provincial Government buildings will be flown at half mast in honour and memory of Jack Byrne.
