Premier Announces Senior Appointments

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced two senior appointments.

Donald H. Burrage, QC, has been appointed Deputy Minister, Department of Justice, effective today, May 6. Mr. Burrage most recently served as Associate Deputy Minister and General Counsel with the department.

Christopher P. Curran, QC, who served most recently as Deputy Minister, Department of Justice, has been appointed Registrar of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. His appointment is effective today.

"I look forward to the continued contributions of Mr. Burrage and Mr. Curran and wish them well in their new roles," said the Premier.

Biographical Information

Donald H. Burrage, QC

Donald H. Burrage, QC, served most recently as Associate Deputy Minister and General Counsel, Department of Justice. He joined the Provincial Government in 1993 as senior litigation counsel with the Department of Justice, and served in that position until 2001 when he became director of civil litigation. In his subsequent executive position as General Counsel for the department, he was senior legal advisor to government on a range of issues. This included appearing regularly in the Supreme Court of Canada, and both the Court of Appeal and Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. Burrage has a bachelor of arts and master of business administration from Memorial University, and bachelor of laws from Dalhousie University. He is an active civic volunteer.

Christopher P. Curran, QC

Christopher Curran, QC, has worked with the Department of Justice in several positions since 1992, having served most recently as Deputy Minister and prior to that as Assistant Deputy Minister (civil law and related services). He has also served with the department as solicitor, high sheriff, and director of legal policy. Mr. Curran also worked with the Newfoundland Legal Aid Commission as staff solicitor, and with the Newfoundland Law Reform Commission as executive director. A barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, Mr. Curran has a bachelor of arts and masters of arts (philosophy) from Memorial University, a bachelor of law from the University of New Brunswick, and has studied philosophy at Albert Ludwigs Universitat, West Germany. Mr. Curran also serves as a lecturer in ethics and moral philosophy at Memorial University�s Department of Philosophy, and has served as a tutor in medical ethics at the university�s Faculty of Medicine. He is also a past president of the Uniform Law Conference of Canada, a national body that is charged with harmonizing laws among the provinces and territories within Canada.
