Media Advisory: Rare Painted Caribou Coats to be Unveiled in Labrador

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Mark Nui, Grand Chief of the Innu Nation, will officially unveil two rare and historically significant caribou coats at the Labrador Interpretation Centre in North West River, Tuesday, February 5, at 11:00 a.m. Joining them in the ceremony will be the Honourable Patty Pottle, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, and Tom Paddon, manager, Labrador operations, Vale Inco.

In June of 2006, The Rooms Provincial Museum and the Innu Nation partnered to acquire one of the two coats from William Jamieson, a private dealer in Ontario, and the second from S. Lynne Cotter. The acquisitions were made possible through the generous support of the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Movable Cultural Property Grants Program, with additional funding provided by Vale Inco and the Innu Development Ltd. Partnership.

The coats will be on public display at the Labrador Interpretation Centre in North West River from Wednesday, February 6, through Sunday, February 10.
