Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, acting Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT SUBMITTED:

Schefferville Area Iron Ore Mine (James and Redmond Properties)
Proponent: Labrador Iron Mines Limited (Reg. 1379)

The proponent has submitted the environmental impact statement (EIS) for public and government review as required under the Environmental Protection Act.  The EIS is intended to address the information requirements contained in the EIS Guidelines that were issued to the proponent on December 12, 2008, and predict and evaluate the environmental effects of the proposed undertaking. The EIS can be viewed on the department�s website at www.env.gov.nl.ca/env/Env or by contacting the environmental assessment committee chairperson, Paul Rideout, at 709-729-4063 or e-mail at paulrideout@gov.nl.ca .

The public deadline to make comments to the minister on the EIS is Wednesday, February 11, 2009. The minister will decide the acceptability of the EIS not later than March 3, 2009.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Marystown Northwest Cottages Development
Proponent: Leo Molloy (Reg. 1403)

The proponent proposes to develop two to three tourist cabins and 15 to 20 serviced recreational vehicle camp sites on 23 hectares of land. The site is located at Northwest Brook on Route 210 between the towns of Marystown and Winterland on the Burin Peninsula. The proposed development will also include an office, canteen and dumping station. Construction is expected to begin as soon as regulatory permits and approvals are in place and is anticipated to take approximately three months. Operation of the facility will be seasonal.

The undertaking was registered on December 22, 2008; public comments are due by January 27, 2009; and the minister's decision is due by February 5, 2009.
