Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, acting Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

 

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Baie Verte Marine Industrial Repair Facility

Proponent: Richard Ballott   (Reg. 1400)

The proponent proposes to expand a present marine industrial facility located at 301A Highway 410 in Baie Verte. All work will be contained inside one building to be constructed on site. The building will be approximately 15 metres by 26 metres and will be approximately six metre high. This building will be heated by an outdoor wood-fired furnace. The facility will be constructed on land adjacent to Highway 410 approximately 117 metres from the high water mark of Baie Verte River. Construction will consist mainly of filling land with crushed rock and pouring a concrete pad upon which, the pre-engineered steel building will be erected. The earliest proposed start date for the facility is late January 2009.

The undertaking was registered on December 08, 2008; public comments are due by January 16, 2009; and the minister's decision is due by January 22, 2009.


Stephenville Shooting Range

Proponent: Town of Stephenville (Reg. 1401)

The proponent proposes to construct a 600 metre rifle range in Stephenville. The range will be owned by the Town of Stephenville but used by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Wildlife and Fisheries Officers, Department of National Defence (DND) and registered members of the general public. The range will be located approximately one kilometre north of the Stephenville town limits on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland. The construction activities will include a gravel access road; administration/storage building; lunchroom; sheltered shooting stand; 600 metre long shooting field; target holders; signage; stop butt (bullet catch); and a gravel parking lot. A two-phase power line and telephone line will be installed along the access road to the site. Construction of the project is scheduled to begin in April 2009 and to be completed in June 2009.

GUIDELINES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT (EIS):

1.) Schefferville Area Iron Ore Mine (James and Redmond Properties)

Proponent: Labrador Iron Mines Limited (Reg. 1379)

The Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Environment and Conservation (the Department) issued, on December 12, 2008, the final guidelines for the preparation of the environmental impact statement for the proposed Schefferville Area Iron Ore Mine (James and Redmond Properties).

The guidelines will provide direction to the proponent, and will identify the information that will be required in the statement of the anticipated effects of the project on the environment.

The final guidelines, along with more information on this project, are available (registry #1379) on the department�s website at www.gov.nl.ca/env. 2.) Elross Lake Area Iron Ore Mine

Proponent: New Millenium Capital Corp. (Reg. 1380)

The Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Environment and Conservation (the Department) issued, on December 12, 2008, the final guidelines for the preparation of the environmental impact statement for the proposed Elross Lake Area Iron Ore Mine.

The guidelines will provide direction to the proponent, and will identify the information that will be required in the statement of the anticipated effects of the project on the environment.
