Homeowners Reminded to Have Oil Tanks Registered

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are reminded that, effective March 31, 2009, all existing home heating oil tanks must be registered. The delivery of heating oil to unregistered systems after that date will be illegal, as homeowners will not be permitted to use unregistered tanks.

"It is important for residents of the province to be aware that the deadline for the registration of heating oil tanks is fast approaching," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, acting Minister of Environment and Conservation. "Given we are into the winter season, homeowners have to consider that weather conditions may play a role in installing an outside tank or altering an existing one. It is important for homeowners to act now and ensure their heating oil tanks are registered before the March deadline."

Homeowners are encouraged to contact their home heating oil provider as soon as possible to make the necessary arrangements to have their systems inspected and registered. A registered tank will have a brass tag riveted onto its vent pipe and the owner will be provided with a certificate of registration. To date, approximately 36,700 systems have been inspected, tagged and registered.

"When heating oil tanks go through the registration process, there is a decreased risk of environmental contamination due to heating oil spills and leaks," said Minister Jackman. "Since the new regulations were introduced, we have seen a substantial decrease in such incidents. I commend homeowners who have been prudent in registering their tanks before the deadline, as well as the industry which has done its part in promoting our efforts."

A number of individuals have been licensed by the Department of Environment and Conservation to inspect and register home heating oil tanks. For more information, including a list of companies with licensed inspectors, visit www.gov.nl.ca/env/psm or call 709-729-0948 or 1-800-563-6181.
