Orma South and Seal Lake Zones Opened for Caribou Hunting in Labrador

The Orma South and Seal Lake zones in Labrador are now open for caribou hunting.

"We have received information to suggest that the George River caribou have migrated to these zones," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, acting Minister of Environment and Conservation. "Although there are some animals currently in both zones, the herd is still moving and we cannot predict exactly where it will settle. As the herd continues to migrate, the number of animals in these zones may change."

The McPhayden River, Milner Lake, Sawbill Lake, Lac Virot, Michikamau West, Michikamau East, Colville Lake, Twin Falls and Orma North zones were opened for caribou hunting on October 1, 2008, and Bay of Islands and Big River were opened to coincide with the George River zone on August 10, 2008. These zones have fixed annual hunting dates and are not affected by the distribution of the George River caribou.

"Our wildlife officials will continue to monitor the movement of the George River caribou herd, and additional areas may open pending movements of animals to those areas," said Minister Jackman. "We ask hunters to exercise caution and safety in all of their pursuits."

Hunters are reminded that it is illegal to dispose of caribou remains within 50 metres of the Trans Labrador Highway (TLH) or in any area visible to the motoring public.
