MMSB Provides Funding for Regional Waste Management Initiatives

Regional waste management initiatives in Central Newfoundland, Burin Peninsula, and Green Bay area received support today totalling $560,000. The funding for these initiatives comes from the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund administered by the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB).

"The Provincial Waste Management Strategy identifies a regional approach as the most cost-effective and appropriate way of addressing the province's waste management needs over the long term, especially in rural areas," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Acting Minister of Environment and Conservation. "I applaud the leadership shown by the three groups in moving that agenda forward in a very positive manner, and we are pleased to support their efforts through MMSB= s Waste Management Trust Fund."

The Central Newfoundland Waste Management Committee received a commitment of $500,000 over a three-year period to enable it to advance its regional waste management plan to the implementation stage, in keeping with the objectives of the Provincial Waste Management Strategy. The new system will see the introduction of curbside recycling programs and other important waste diversion initiatives throughout the region.

In order to maintain momentum in the further development and implementation of a new waste management plan for the Burin Peninsula as a whole, the Burin Peninsula Waste Management Corporation received $50,000 to support the ongoing activities of its regional waste management coordinator position. MMSB provided an earlier $50,000 contribution in 2007 to help the corporation carry out its mandate, along with a separate contribution of $80,000 to engage a consultant to update and extend previous work undertaken on a long-term waste management plan for the region.

MMSB also provided $10,000 to the Green Bay Waste Authority to support its waste management education and awareness activities as a means of promoting and advancing the goals of its regional waste management plan.

"The work being done in these regions is instrumental in advancing the Waste Management Strategy and provides good examples of regional cooperation for other areas of the province," said the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs. "This funding will allow these groups to gain valuable experience in providing cost-effective regional services and become self sufficient as regional authorities."

John Scott, Chair and CEO of the MMSB, said they will continue to make strategic investments through the MMSBs trust fund to help regional waste committees in all parts of the province advance their mandates.

"Working closely with regional waste management committees and other stakeholders is vital to meeting the goals of the Provincial Waste Management Strategy," said Mr. Scott. "In particular, it is important in ensuring that the necessary infrastructure to support convenient curbside recycling activities throughout the province is put in place to keep our province green."

MMSB is a provincial Crown agency that reports to the Minister of Environment and Conservation. MMSB supports modern waste management practices in the province, with a particular focus on waste diversion, recycling and public education, in order to ensure a clean and healthy environment throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
