Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

CBPPL Districts 14 and 15 Five-Year Operating Plan 2009-2013
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited (Reg. 1397)

The proposal is to include timber harvesting, primary resource road construction, silviculture and other forest management activities as required. The proposed harvest area is within Forest Management Districts 14 and 15, located on the west and southwest coasts of the Island, from Burgeo and Port aux Basques in the south to the southern boundary of Gros Morne National Park in the north. The plan describes a total scheduled harvest of 1,784,000 cubic metres of timber and construction of 77 kilometers of primary forest access roads. Also proposed are silviculture treatments on a total of 6,250 hectares: planting and gap planting including site preparation where required (1,950 hectares) and pre-commercial thinning (4,100 hectares). Vegetation control using herbicides may be employed on 200 hectares.

The undertaking was registered on October 3, 2008; public comments are due on November 10, 2008; and, the minister's decision is due on November 17, 2008.
