Becoming an Outdoors Woman Program Taking Place in Gros Morne National Park

Next month, female outdoor enthusiasts in Newfoundland and Labrador will have an opportunity to join the more than 20,000 women across North America who participate each year in the Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) program. The outdoor skills training program for women 18 years of age and older will be held at Killdevil Camp, Lomond, Gros Morne National Park, from October 10-12.

"This program is as much about building confidence as it is about building competence," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "It helps remove barriers and builds a strong connection to the environment in a very supportive setting. The countless women who have participated in this program have attested to the great deal they learned about themselves as individuals, in addition to the valuable skills they acquired."

During the BOW weekend, participants will have an opportunity to learn rifle, shotgun, outdoor survival, map and compass, global positioning system (GPS) navigation, and canoeing and fishing skills, to name a few. Registration cost is $180 and covers accommodations for two nights, seven meals, course instruction and the use of demonstration equipment. There are also scholarships available for single mothers or students who may require financial assistance.

"In a non-competitive atmosphere, the women in this program will focus on outdoor recreational skills," said Minister Johnson. "The natural heritage of our province is second to none, and I am pleased that more and more women are becoming involved in activities to help them enjoy and experience it. I wish all participants an enjoyable weekend in the beautiful Gros Morne setting."
