2008 Parks as Natures Classroom Program Gets Underway

While provincial parks across the province are closing to campers for the 2008 season, they are gearing up to greet a different type of visitor for the fall. From September 17 - October 22, the Parks as Natures Classroom program will be offered to students from Grades 1-6 to teach them about various plants and animals that live in the environment, as well as the important role the environment plays.

"In the fall, our parks and reserves turn into outdoor classrooms for school children across the province," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "It is an opportunity to promote environmental stewardship while, at the same time, help children explore the natural wonders of our province."

Developed co-operatively with the Department of Education, the Parks as Natures Classroom program is an environmental education program designed to give teachers and students an opportunity to learn in an outdoor setting. Under the guidance of a park interpreter, the natural environment and natural processes are explored by students.

"This program is a prime example of how partnerships serve to enhance our provincial curriculum," said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. "Primary and elementary students can take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in parks throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. I commend teachers and schools for recognizing the value of this educational and engaging program, and I encourage everyone who can to take advantage of this unique learning opportunity."

With a high demand for the program, schools are encouraged to book their visits early. Parks and reserves hosted approximately 3,000 school students last fall.

"I would like to extend an invitation to all primary and elementary schools to take part in this program again this year," said Minister Johnson. "This is a wonderful opportunity to study nature and get close to nature, while also learning the important role we must all play in terms of sustainability."
