Hunting Season Opens This Weekend

Hunters will take to the woods in many parts of the province this weekend, as the hunting season for big game opens. Many of the big game hunting seasons in central and western portions of the island and in Labrador open on Saturday, September 13. The hunting seasons for other areas of the province open on October 4.

"Participation in hunting and trapping by residents of the province is an important component in managing our big game, small game and furbearing populations," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "Considerable benefits are also derived from non-resident hunters who come to enjoy our wild places and make a substantial contribution to our provincial economy."

Minister Johnson also reminded hunters and trappers to keep safety foremost in their minds during this years hunt. "Attention to safety is an important aspect of the big game hunt," said Minister Johnson. "There are some general rules that all hunters and trappers should follow in terms of ensuring that safety equipment such as personal flotation devices and helmets are used when required. Also, first aid kits, survival kits, navigational tools and communication equipment should be carried at all times."

Hunters and trappers are asked to review all regulations related to these outdoor pursuits before heading into the field. These regulations are outlined in the 2008-09 Newfoundland and Labrador Hunting and Trapping Guide. The guide can also be accessed at: //www.env.gov.nl.ca/env/wildlife/hnttrapfish/index.htm

"I encourage all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to continue to play an active role in managing our wildlife and report any illegal activities or sick or injured wildlife to officials," said Minister Johnson. "I also encourage hunters to support the Caribou Health Monitoring Program which helps us evaluate the body condition and general health of the Newfoundland Woodland Caribou, as this is an important aspect of our five-year caribou strategy."

Licensed caribou hunters who submit parts of their harvested caribou to the Wildlife Division will be entered in a draw for prizes for their efforts. More information on this program can be found in the Hunting and Trapping Guide or on the website referenced above.
