Environment and Conservation August 25, 2008 Environmental Assessment Bulletin The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT COMMITTEES APPOINTED: Schefferville Area Iron Ore Mine (James and Redmond Properties) Proponent: Labrador Iron Mines Limited ( Reg. 1379)The following agencies have been appointed to the Environmental Assessment Committee for the above undertaking and will provide the minister with scientific and technical advice on the Environmental Impact Statement: Elross Lake Area Iron Ore Mine Proponent: New Millenium Capital Corp. (Reg. 1380) The following agencies have been appointed to the Environmental Assessment Committee for the above undertaking and will provide the minister with scientific and technical advice on the Environmental Impact Statement: GUIDELINES ISSUED: Bloom Lake Railway (Resubmission) (Reg. 1378) Proponent: Consolidated Thomson Iron Mines Ltd. The minister has issued final guidelines for the Environmental Preview Report (EPR) for the above undertaking. The proponent is now required to prepare the EPR and submit the document for review by the Environmental Assessment Committee and the public. The guidelines are available and may be accessed on the department�s website or by contacting the chair of the Environmental Assessment Committee, Milt Crewe at 709-637-2375 or e-mail at miltoncrewe@gov.nl.ca UNDERTAKING REGISTERED: Burin Peninsula Multipurpose Trail (Resubmission) Proponent: Powderhorn Trail Blazers ( Reg. 1395)The proposal is to construct 33 kilometres of new trail to combine existing trails on the Burin Peninsula and create a 175 kilometre multipurpose trail. The proposed construction would start near the PowderHorn Mountain which is 11.9 kilometres due west of Boat Harbour West, Placentia Bay, and the end at Point Rosie, which is 20 kilometres northeast of Garnish, Fortune Bay. Other trails in the system include the PowderHorn Trail, the Garnish - Point Rosie Trail, the Garnish Pond Trail System. These routes will be used for activities such as hiking, motocross biking, cross-country skiing, all terrain vehicles, and snowmobiles. The proponent plans to complete the loop over a five-year period. The undertaking was registered on August 18, 2008; public comments are due by September 29, 2008; and, the minister's decision is due by September 29, 2008.
