Trapper Education Course Being Offered

Trapper education courses are being offered to interested participants throughout the province from August 24 to October 28. The one-day course is administered by the Newfoundland and Labrador Trappers Association in co-operation with the Department of Environment and Conservation.

"Trapping is a very significant part of our culture and heritage and is an excellent way for people to enjoy the outdoors and our wildlife resources," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "There is a long tradition of fur harvesting in Newfoundland and Labrador which plays a significant role in wildlife management and has economic value to our province.

"The Newfoundland and Labrador Trappers Association is to be commended on its dedication and commitment towards educating the trappers of this province. Trappers provide important information concerning fur-bearing animal populations. Trappers also often help control over-abundant wildlife populations which can have implications for the environment and social infrastructure if left unmanaged. Coyotes, for example, are a significant predator of other wildlife such as the woodland caribou, and trapping has proven to be the most effective tool available for managing such issues."

Minister Johnson noted that the successful completion of the one-day course is a mandatory pre-requisite of licensing for all new beaver and general trappers. Registration cost is $100. The following dates and locations are available:

  • St. Johns August 24
