July 24, 2008$100,000 in Funding Provided to Support Environmental
Initiatives
The Provincial Government today announced $100,000 in funding to be
used toward climate change projects and programs that reduce greenhouse
gas emissions in the province.
The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and
Conservation, announced $34,000 of the funding is to be provided to the
Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association for its anti-idling campaign
and $66,000 to Ocean Nets project Green Community Challenge.
"Government is pleased with the efforts of the Lung Association and
Ocean Net in promoting greenhouse gas reduction and adapting to the
impacts of climate change in the province," said Minister Johnson.
"These partnerships will add to the success of the provinces
implementation of its Climate Change Action Plan."
Ocean Nets Green Community Challenge focuses on awareness and
involvement in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
"Ocean Net will proceed with the greening of communities throughout
the province through its Green Community Fair,
said Bob OBrien, founder and
chair. In addition focused
meetings will take place in each community with an interactive
educational display designed as the center point of adapting to climate
change and challenges."
The Lung Association plays an integral part in promoting the
reduction of unnecessary vehicle emissions which is directly linked to
air quality and climate change.
"The association provides educational information on both indoor and
outdoor air quality, said Paul
Thomey, executive director. We
are creating awareness of the harmful effects of unnecessary idling and
encouraging the designation of idle-free zones around schools and public
buildings."
Minister Johnson encourages other community groups and businesses to
get involved in promoting green house gas reduction. For more
