Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Glovertown Shipyard Marine Vessel Maintenance/Repair Facility

Proponent:  Glovertown Shipyards Ltd. (Reg. 1386)

Glovertown Shipyards Ltd. is proposing to install a new marine railway/haulout at its facility in Glovertown.  This facility will complement two marine railways installed in 1993. The new slipway will enhance the maximum capacity of vessels to 500 tons or approximately 150 feet. The proposal is to construct the marine haulout in three stages commencing between August and September 2008 to August 2009.

The undertaking was registered on June 18, 2008; public comments are due by July 25, 2008; and, the minister's decision is due by August 2, 2008.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:

1.) Main Brook Tourism Infrastructure Development

Proponent: White Bay Central Development Association/Nordic Economic

Development Association (Reg. 1367)

2.) White Bay Exploration Access Trail

Proponent: Northern Abitibi Mining Corporation (Reg. 1370)

3.) Port aux Basques to Belle Isle (Appalachian) Hiking Trail

Proponent: International Appalachian Trail NL Chapter Inc. (Reg. 1372)

This undertaking was released from environmental assessment subject to the following conditions:

The Parks and Natural Areas Division of the Department of Environment and Conservation must be consulted prior to construction of the trail in sites where Parks and Natural Areas Division has management responsibilities.

The Wildlife Division of the Department of Environment and Conservation must be consulted prior to any trail development in:

o Section 7/Map 16B to discuss further options to minimize potential negative impact on known rare plant species.

o Sections 3, 4 & 5/Maps 5B, 11A & 11B as these areas are frequently used by caribou and caution should be taken when conducting work within these areas to avoid any conflicts.

The conditions of release for the 2005 Appalachian Hiking Trail (Registration #1194) are applicable.

4.) Garden Hill Drilling and Production Program Amendment
