Removal of Moose Calves Discouraged

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, reminds the public that the time of the year for outdoor activities such as camping and fishing is here, and it is also the time of the year when people may encounter wildlife, such as moose, with their newborn young. In some instances, it may also appear that these young animals have been left on their own and seemingly abandoned.

"A young wild animal appearing alone and unattended may not necessarily be lost or orphaned," said Minister Johnson. "It may only mean that the parent is off looking for food. It is important that trained wildlife officials deal with such situations, and the general public refrain from intervening."

The minister also reiterated that a mother moose sensing her calf is threatened may attack and cause considerable injury to an individual, and such attacks have occurred in the past. Furthermore, wildlife officials continuously have to deal with moose calves, and occasionally the young of other species, that have been removed from the woods by well-meaning people.

A It is important that these animals be left in their natural habitat, and interfering may mean that we may actually be the ones creating the orphan," said Minister Johnson. "It is strongly recommended that the public not intervene, even if it is apparent that the calf requires assistance."

In addition to moose calves, this rule should also be applied to all other wildlife species.
