Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

2008 Balsam Fir Sawfly Program in Western NL      (Reg. 1383)
Proponent:    Department of Natural Resources, Forestry Services Branch

The proponent proposes to carry out an operational aerial control program in Western Newfoundland using the biological control agent Abietiv (nucleopolyhedrovirus).

The program will involve application mainly to areas forecast to receive moderate and severe balsam for sawfly defoliation in 2008 or additional adjacent silviculture areas which will be monitored and treated if necessary. The spray blocks are located in the Cormack area near Deer Lake and Sandy Lake.

The undertaking was registered on May 14, 2008; comments are due June 20, 2008; and the minister's decision is due June 28, 2008.

AbitibiBowater District 11 Five-Year Plan 2008-12 (Lemottes Area) Amendment 
Proponent: AbitibiBowater        (Reg. 1384)

AbitibiBowater is proposing to amend the Five-Year Plan to include the harvesting of approximately 1000 cubic meters of non-pulpwood species, representing approximately 70 hectares. This area was previously harvested by AbitibiBowater during the previous five-year plan (2003-07) for pulpwood to supply the Grand Falls-Windsor Mill. 

The proposed harvest area is within Forest Management District 11, located south of the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor and generally to the east of Lemottes Lake.

The undertaking was registered on May 15, 2008; public comments are due by June 20, 2008; and, the minister's decision is due by June 28, 2008.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown
