Becoming an Outdoors Woman Workshop Set for June

If you are a woman 18 years of age or older who is interested in learning skills to participate in fishing, hunting or hiking, then the Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) program is for you. It will be offered at Burry Heights on the Salmonier Line from June 27-29.

The three-day workshop is for beginners, and is focused on providing the skills, knowledge and confidence necessary for women to carry out outdoor activities such as canoeing, outdoor survival, map and compass, fly fishing, hunting, hiking and backpacking.

This is a great opportunity for women to enhance their outdoor skills and become more aware of the environment as they learn more about themselves," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "Women from all backgrounds will come together to learn more about harvest and non-harvest activities in a comfortable and cooperative setting."

Registration for the workshop is $170 and includes two nights accommodations, seven meals and all course materials and instruction. There are scholarships available for students and single mothers who may require financial assistance.

Minister Johnson encourages all women who are interested in pursuing outdoor activities to sign up for this upcoming workshop. "The positive feedback from previous workshops, coupled with the percentage of return registrants, speaks very highly to its success at removing barriers for women who would like to engage in these traditionally male-dominated activities."

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Becoming an Outdoors Woman Program in Newfoundland and Labrador. To mark this milestone, the province will host the International BOW Coordinators Conference in Bauline in July of this year.
