Environmental Assessment Bulletin 

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT SUBMITTED:

Long Harbour Commercial Nickel Processing Plant
Proponent:   Vale Inco Newfoundland and Labrador Limited                                       (Reg. 1243)

The proponent has revised and supplemented the November 2007 version of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and has now re-submitted it for further public and government review as required under the Environmental Protection Act.   The EIS is intended to address the information requirements contained in the EIS Guidelines that were issued to the proponent on October 31, 2006 and the requirements in the minister�s decision of January 15, 2008 on the November 2007 version of the EIS. The EIS is contained in several volumes with appendices and can be viewed on the department�s website at www.gov.nl.ca/env/Env/EA%202001/pages/index.htm or by requesting a copy by contacting the EA Office at the number listed below.

The public deadline to submit written comments to the minister on the EIS is Wednesday, June 4, 2008.  The minister�s decision on the acceptability of the EIS is due Monday, June 23, 2008.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Garden Hill Drilling and Production Program Amendment
Proponent: PDI Production Inc.                                                                               (Reg. 1375)

The proposal is to increase the storage capacity for produced crude oil at the Garden Hill South oil and gas project site, registered in 2001 by the Canadian Imperial Venture Corporation (CIVC). To meet this requirement, the proponent is to construct a 10,000 barrel (approximately 1.59 million litres) above ground storage tank, with the capacity to build a second tank of the same volume in the future as demand may require. Additionally, a properly designed containment berm will be constructed to house the tank(s). The proposed site is within the boundary of the Town of Cape St. George, off Route 60, approximately 60 kilometres west of Stephenville.

This undertaking was registered on April 15, 2008; public comments are due by May 20, 2008; and, the minister's decision is due by May 30, 2008.

Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.
