Environment and Conservation January 16, 2008 Environmental Assessment Bulletin
The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following event relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT REQUIRES ADDITIONAL WORK: Long Harbour Commercial Nickel Processing Plant
Following public and agency review of the November 6, 2007 submission of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Long Harbour Commercial Nickel Processing Plant, it has been determined that the proponent needs to provide a revised EIS document for another review. The proponent has been provided with direction in the areas of the EIS that require clarification, supplementary information, or correction. This includes clarification on the siting and capacity for residue storage, additional information on the life span of the project, assessment of an alternative accidental event scenario relative to seabirds, information on maintenance of the outfall, more detail on mitigative measures, the cumulative effects assessment, the compensation policy pertaining to fishers and aquaculture operators, and within-project alternatives.
