Minister Announces New Appointments to Memorial University Board of Regents

The Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education, announced today four new appointments to the Memorial University Board of Regents..

Mary Cormier of Corner Brook, Michelle Daye of Grand Falls-Windsor, Noreen Greene-Fraize of St. John�s and Debbie Singleton of Happy Valley-Goose Bay will join the Board of Regents effective immediately.

"I am very pleased to have these dedicated and talented women join Memorial�s Board of Regents," said Minister Burke. "They represent the various regions of our province and will complement the current board members in their work to continue to build this great institution. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing members of the board for their time, energy and dedication during their period of service. These are volunteer positions and I acknowledge and appreciate the contributions made by all individuals who take on this role"

Memorial University Board of Regents is responsible for the management, administration and affairs of the university. It comprises a diverse group of individuals representing business, social and educational sectors, as well as students.

"One of this province�s greatest assets is Memorial University � the largest university in Atlantic Canada," said Minister Burke. "Working in partnership with the Board of Regents, our government continues to make innovative and strategic investments that are helping MUN flourish. I would like to welcome these newest members to the board and have every confidence they will make an invaluable contribution to the work of the board and to the university overall."

Biographies

Mary Cormier graduated from Memorial University in 1987 with a B.Ed. Ms. Cormier also attended the J.P. Gardner Institute of Memorial University Entrepreneurial Studies in 1996 and received a Diploma in Fine Arts from the University of Calgary in 1992. She currently teaches music at St. Gerard�s Elementary and C.C. Loughlin Elementary in Corner Brook. In addition, Ms. Cormier has been a cast member of many community musicals of Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador and is the teacher representative for the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers� Association at St. Gerard�s School.

Michelle Daye graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Arts Education in 1988. Ms. Daye went on to earn her R.N. at the General Hospital School of Nursing in 1988 and worked for 10 years as a nurse at the General Hospital. She has also worked in private industry as a managing partner and co-owner of HealthQuest, a home healthcare retail and service business based in St. John�s and Grand Falls-Windsor. Ms. Daye volunteers her time with the Grand Falls-Windsor Community Food Bank and the Grand Falls-Windsor Minor Hockey Association.

Debbie Singleton is a legal office manager working with her husband in a community law firm in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Prior to this, Ms. Singleton worked as a laboratory technologist for 12 years. She is currently a member of the Labrador Grenfell Health Board, is past chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Students, has been involved in Boy Scouts of Canada and is currently active with the Curling Club of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Noreen Greene-Fraize is a retired educator who has taught music education in several schools in the Eastern School District. Her last position was as choral music specialist at Holy Trinity Elementary. Ms. Greene-Fraize is also past president of the Provincial Music Special Interest Council of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers� Association and was granted a Privy Council appointment to the post of member of the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women.
