Successful Partnership Brings Provincial Artists to Students

Students across Newfoundland and Labrador are again this year being exposed to the creativity and expertise of writers and artists through the Provincial Governments $12 million K-12 fine arts and cultural strategy, Cultural Connections. The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC) has received $220,000 this year to support ArtsSmarts, the School Touring Program and the Visiting Artists Program.

The Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education, visited with students of St. Francis of Assisi in Outer Cove today to see first-hand an ArtsSmarts workshop in progress. The workshop was conducted by writer Carmelita McGrath, chair of the NLAC, and visual artist Louise Hudson.

"The positive impact of our Cultural Connections strategy is evident in so many aspects of the school system," said Minister Burke. "The arts programs, so successfully administered by the Arts Council, are great examples of how we are fostering links between artists and students right in our classrooms, and increasing the presence of cultural content in the curriculum."

The NLAC provides staffing and administrative costs and requirements to operate the arts in education programs for the school year. "We are very proud of the success of these programs," said Reg Winsor, Executive Director of the NLAC. "We look forward to further developing this partnership with the Provincial Government as we work to provide students with direct access to high quality artistic experiences."

The ArtsSmarts Program brings artists into schools to work with students on a project that is linked to the curriculum. It encourages students to develop their creative skills through active participation in the arts with a professional artist.

The School Touring Program supports significant touring productions to schools. This program is open to a variety of artistic disciplines such as dance, film, visual arts or theatre. Presentations or performances must enhance the school curriculum and explore the provinces culture past or present.

The Visiting Artist Program provides funding to allow an artist, a group of artists or an arts organization to come into a school for talks, readings, performances and workshops. The visits help students gain a greater understanding of the arts and its role in society. This program is a partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association which contributes $10,000 annually.

"Our government firmly believes that strengthening arts and cultural content in schools is a key factor in instilling pride in our history and respect for our heritage," said Minister Burke. "It is important our young people feel a connection with our culture. Our artists and performers are world-class, and through Cultural Connections, they provide inspiration to a whole new generation of actors, musicians, writers and painters."

Applications for the arts in education programs can be made to the NLAC. Schools apply for the ArtsSmarts and Visiting Artists Program, and individual artists, groups, and non-profit arts organizations apply for the School Touring Program.
