Exploits Valley Intermediate Extension Officially Opened

The Provincial Governments $3.2 million investment to expand and renovate Exploits Valley Intermediate in Grand Falls-Windsor was celebrated today as the school community officially opened their improved facility. The renovations will substantially enhance the learning environment for students and according to the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education, reflect the Provincial Governments commitment to a high quality education system across Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Over the past several years, this government has focused heavily on addressing the infrastructure needs of individual schools and the changes revealed today at Exploits Valley Intermediate are a great example of the kind of work thats being done in schools in virtually every corner of the province," said Minister Burke. "I am pleased to see this project completed, which will see students, teachers and administrators able to enjoy the many new and exciting initiatives in a safe and comfortable learning environment."

The newly-renovated facility has a new stage in the gymnasium, new change rooms, two additional classrooms, a technology education suite, and a home economics room. The renovations also provided new space for the guidance counselor, and visiting itinerant teachers and social workers. The enclosed courtyard created by the extension has been leveled off and sodded, creating a sheltered outdoor space for students and teachers. The main entrance now has a lift to assist students with mobility challenges, improving accessibility to the second floor.

In addition, construction of a fitness centre for Exploits Valley has recently been approved at a cost of $250,000. This will provide room for the $23,000 worth of phys ed equipment that was sent to the school as part of the Provincial Governments $3.2 million physical education purchase program.

"An investment such as this in the education of our young people is very welcome," said Susan Sullivan, MHA for Grand Falls-Windosr-Buchans. "These renovations reflect the changing educational needs of our time. I am particularly pleased to see the inclusion of a technology education suite, a home economics room and a fitness room. Students, faculty and indeed the entire community have a facility of which they can be proud."

Budget 2008 includes an $88 million commitment for new school construction and maintenance, an increase of $39.5 million over the previous year. Funding has been allocated for the construction of 10 new schools, as well as renovations and extensions to many existing buildings. There are also 250 roofing, siding, window and exterior maintenance projects either completed or underway since 2004, at a cost of approximately $31 million.

"The Department of Education is determined that every student in this province is offered the highest quality education," said Minister Burke. "Part of that commitment means ensuring students and teachers attend safe, secure learning environments. With the extension and renovations now complete, all intermediate students in Grand Falls-Windsor can enjoy improved opportunities and learning experiences."
