Work Progresses on New Governance Structure for Sir Wilfred Grenfell College

The deliberations of a stakeholder advisory committee to support increased autonomy for Sir Wilfred Grenfell College are now complete. The committee was established late last fall by the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education, to help inform the Provincial Governments work to create two universities within one Memorial University system.

"The stakeholder advisory committee has done an excellent job of developing principles to help guide the Provincial Governments implementation process," said Minister Burke. "I would like to acknowledge the work of all members of the advisory committee and thank Dr. Adrian Fowler and Mr. Joe ONeill for their leadership and guidance as co-chairs."

In April 2007, the Williams Government released an independent report which recommended two universities within one Memorial University system. This system would be presided over by one Board of Regents, with each university having its own senate, budget and executive.

The stakeholder advisory committee included members of the Board of Regents, student representatives, officials from Memorial and Grenfell campuses, and representatives of the Provincial Government.

"Government remains committed to making the necessary changes to give Sir Wilfred Grenfell College university status," said Minister Burke. "The input of the stakeholder advisory committee will help ensure a smooth transition for both campuses and a new university system that will continue to be beneficial to students and to our higher education system in the province."

The Provincial Government will consider this input as it develops the legislative requirements to support this new governance structure for the current session of the House of Assembly.
