Nicholsville One Step Closer to New Bridge

Site preparation is underway on a new bridge for the community of Nicholsville.

The Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Transportation and Works, announced today that Brook Enterprises Inc. of Corner Brook was awarded a $5.27 million tender contract to construct the one lane, 110-metre, single-span, steel truss bridge over the Humber River. The bridge also includes a sidewalk.

Im pleased to say the contract has been awarded and site work is now underway, said Minister Hickey. The Williams Government assured the people of the Nicholsville area from day one that we would replace their bridge in a timely fashion and we have delivered.

On October 30, 2006, the Department of Transportation and Works announced the immediate closure of the original Nicholsville Bridge in the interest of public safety. That bridge was constructed in 1940. It is anticipated construction of the new bridge will be completed in July 2008.
