Baie Verte Area Receives $3 Million for Road Improvements

Motorists will experience smoother roads in the Baie Verte region as the Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced an investment of $3 million under the Provincial Roads Improvement Program for projects in the area.

"This government has made an unprecedented investment of $66.5 million in this roads program, the largest to date," said Minister Hickey. "We will continue to invest extensively in transportation infrastructure upgrades to improve driving conditions."

Road improvement projects planned for the Baie Verte area are:

  • Replacing culvert at Fleur de Lys, carried over from the previous construction season;
  • Upgrading and paving a section of Route 419, Wild Cove Road, including replacement of a culvert;
  • Upgrading and paving a section of Route 410, Baie Verte towards Fleur de Lys;
  • Upgrading and paving a section of Route 414, La Scie Highway;
  • Upgrading and paving a section of Route 413, between Burlington and Middle Arm;
  • Upgrading and paving a section of Route 413 between Burlington and Smiths Harbour;
  • Upgrading and paving a section of Route 391 through Kings Point;
  • Completing the upgrading and paving of Route 417, to Woodstock and Pacquet;
  • Supplying and stockpiling crushed gravel at various locations on the Baie Verte Peninsula and Green Bay.

"I am very pleased with the projects announced for the area this year," said Paul Shelley, MHA for the District of Baie Verte. "Since this government took office in 2003, my district has received significantly more funding from the Provincial Roads Improvement Program than it had during my 10 years in opposition. Much work has been done and I am confident that this government will carry on its commitment to the people of the district."

Government estimates the Provincial Roads Improvement Program creates 1,200 person years of employment, with 94 per cent of the work being done in rural areas. This is the second year of governments six-year strategy for infrastructure improvements exceeding $2 billion.
