Transportation and Works May 15, 2007 Government Provides Additional Funding for Road Work in Grand Falls-Buchans
The Williams Government will allocate extra funding to improve the Buchans Highway, as part of Budget 2007s Provincial Roads Improvement Program. The Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced another $400,000 for road repairs in the District of Grand Falls-Buchans, bringing the total investment this year to $1 million. "Officials in my department have recognized the need for further rehabilitation of this important stretch of highway and I am pleased that we have been able to secure the necessary extra funding to make this needed work a reality," said Minster Hickey. "We are committed to improving the transportation infrastructure in Newfoundland and Labrador and we will continue to make improvements when and where we can."
Government estimates the Provincial Roads Improvement Program creates 1,200 person years of employment, with 94 per cent of the work being done in rural areas. This is the second year of governments six-year strategy for infrastructure improvements exceeding $2 billion. - 30 - Media contact: davidsalter@gov.nl.ca
