Port au Port Area Will Receive $1 Million in Road Improvements

Roads in the Port au Port area will undergo repairs this construction season as a result of the unprecedented $66.5 million Provincial Roads Improvement Program under Budget 2007. The Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced an investment of $1 million for road improvements in this area.

"Government is committed to providing quality transportation infrastructure in rural areas of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Hickey. "We have shown our commitment with a very substantial investment of $66.5 million, the largest investment in the Provincial Roads Improvement Program to date."

Road improvement projects planned for Port au Port this year include:

  • Resurfacing a section of Route 460 at Cape St. George;
  • Supplying and placing erosion protection, Fox Island River;
  • Patching various areas in the district of Port au Port;
  • Pulverizing and re-paving Father Joys Road; and,
  • Resurfacing a section of Route 460 in Port au Port East.
  • "I am very pleased with the funding for my district this year," said Tony Cornect, MHA for Port au Port. "This money will go a long way to address current road conditions and to create a better driving experience for motorists in the area."

    Government estimates the Provincial Roads Improvement Program creates 1,200 person years of employment, with 94 per cent of the work being done in rural areas. This is the second year of governments six-year strategy for infrastructure improvements exceeding $2 billion.
