Further Clean-up of Former Grace Hospital Site

The awarding of a contract for the environmental remediation of the former Grace General Hospital site was announced today by the Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Transportation and Works.

Enviro Clean (Nfld) Limited Power Vac Services of Paradise will perform a $2.012 million environmental remediation of the 1950s and 1960s sections of the former hospital.

"In Budget 2006, we announced $18 million would be invested in public buildings for maintenance, reconfiguration, remediation and demolition and this is a prime example of where this investment is going," said Minister Hickey.

The work, which will entail the removal of asbestos and lead paint, is expected to start in the coming weeks and be completed by late spring.

Once the work is done, government anticipates the former hospital buildings will be demolished, leaving only the former nurses residences remaining on the site.
