Four Provincial Boys Volleyball Tournaments This Weekend

The boys high school volleyballers take to the courts this coming weekend, as four provincial volleyball titles are up for grabs. Thirty-two teams in all will be competing for the championship banners. In last week�s action teams from Cloud River Academy (Roddickton), St. Michael�s High (Bell Island) Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), St. Michael�s High (Bell Island) J.C. Erhardt Memorial (Makkovik), Southwest Arm Academy (Little Heart�s Ease) captured the Girls 2A, 3A, 4A, Fair Play and Small Schools Girls Volleyball and Small Schools Boys Volleyball tournaments.

Holy Cross School in Eastport will host the Boys Fair Play Volleyball event. Six teams will compete in a round robin format to determine the top four seeds for the playoffs. In addition to the host, Holy Cross, the following schools will also take part � Gander Collegiate, Clarenville High, Heritage Collegiate (Lethbridge), Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican) and Tricentia Academy (Arnolds Cove). Games get underway 9:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday with a total of 15 round robin games scheduled. The top four teams will advance to the semi-finals with 1st and 4th playing off and 2nd and 3rd playing off. The winners of these matches will meet in the championship game Saturday afternoon.

For the second weekend in a row, teams will travel to Roddickton for provincial volleyball. Last weekend Cloud River Academy hosted the 2A Girls tournament and this weekend they host the 2A Boys Provincials. Eight teams will play in a two-division format. Division A will consist of the host, Cloud River Academy, Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), Main River Academy (Pollards Point), and Fitzgerald Academy (English Hr. East). Facing off in Division B will be Gill Memorial Academy (Musgrave Hr.), Bonne Bay Academy (Woody Point), Grandy�s River Collegiate (Burnt Island) and Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point). Games begin 9:00 a.m., Friday and continue throughout Friday and Saturday. The top two teams from each division will meet in semi-final games with the winners competing in the championship game.

Random Island Academy will host the 3A Boys Volleyball Provincials. Eight teams will also be competing in this event, which will be run in a four-team, two-division round robin format. The top two teams from each division will meet in the semi-finals with the semi-final winners playing off for the title Saturday afternoon. Teams competing in Division A include Random Island Academy, J.M.Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Dorset Collegiate (Pilleys Island) and Roncalli High (Port Saunders). Battling it out in Division B will be Riverwood Academy (Wings Point), Piccadilly High (Port Au Port), King Academy (Harbour Breton) and Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Happy Valley-Goose Bay). The tournament starts 6:30 p.m. Thursday and concludes Saturday afternoon.

Ten teams will travel to Grand Falls-Windsor to compete for the 4A Boys Volleyball Championship banner. Division A will play at the Maple Gym venue while Division B will play their games at Exploits Valley High. Teams in Division A include Clarenville High , O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Gander Collegiate, Lewisporte Collegiate and Corner Brook High. Competing in Division B will be defending champion Phoenix Academy (Carmanville), Gonzaga High (St. John�s), Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts) and the host Exploits Valley High. Games get underway at both venues at 2:00 p.m. Friday. The playoffs and championship game will go ahead Saturday afternoon.

In addition to the coveted championship banner, each school in these tournaments is also striving to win the Team Sportsmanship Award Banner. The banner is awarded to the team which exhibit exemplary sportsmanship behavior both on and off the court, are true ambassadors of the sport, great representatives of their school, and exemplify the true ideals of high school sport. In addition to the team sportsmanship banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal. The top two teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals.
