School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Holding Island Small Schools Boys Volleyball This Weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will host its Island Small Schools Boys Volleyball tournament this weekend to determine the island representative for the provincial tournament in Churchill Falls in December. Eight teams will converge on Valmont Academy in Kings Point to take part in the event.

The tournament will be set up in two divisions of four, playing a round robin format. The top two teams from each division will advance to the playoff round. Competing in Division A will be Valmont Academy, Mary Simms All Grade (Main Brook), Basque Memorial (Red Bay) and St. Annes School (Conche). Division B includes Southwest Arm Academy (Little Hearts Ease), Our Lady of Labrador (West St. Modeste), William Gillett Academy (Charlottetown) and St. Marks School (Kings Cove).

Small schools tournaments are held in volleyball and basketball. They are tournaments for schools with a population of 45 students or less. The provincial Small Schools Boys and Girls Volleyball are being held in Labrador this year. Whenever SSNL holds a provincial tournament in Labrador, an island tournament is needed to determine which school will represent the island portion of the province. The cost is too great for all schools to travel to Labrador. The island winner will compete against the small schools from Labrador.

The tournament gets underway at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday with the first three matches. The round robin play continues throughout Saturday, starting at 9:00 a.m. The playoffs are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Saturday, with the top two teams advancing to the championship game.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal. The top teams will be awarded gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner.

RBC has joined as a major partner of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.
