School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Starts Athletic Year with
Boys Slo Pitch and Girls Soccer This Weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador kicks off its 2007-08 school year this coming weekend as the first four provincial champions will be crowned. Student-athletes from all over the province will come together to compete in girls soccer and boys slo pitch.

Indian River High in Springdale is the host school for the 3A Girls Provincial Soccer championships. Six teams will compete in a two division format to determine the playoff teams. Division A will consist of Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Happy Valley-Goose Bay), Holy Trinity High (Torbay), and the host school, Indian River High. Playing in Division B will be Carbonear Collegiate, St. Lawrence Academy and Stephenville High. Games get underway 8:30, Friday morning and continue throughout the day. The top two teams from the round robin meet in the playoff round Saturday at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The championship game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The Girls 4A Provincial Soccer Championships are being hosted by O�Donel High in Mount Pearl. Six teams will be vying for this title, including O�Donel High, Booth Memorial (St. John�s), and Corner Brook High in Division A and Mount Pearl Sr. High, Holy Spirit High (Manuels) and Marystown Central High in Division B. Round robin games will be played 8:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the Central Pitch in Mount Pearl and Nugents Field in Manuels. The semi-final games will be played at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. in Mount Pearl with the winners advancing to the championship game at 3 p.m.

The high school boys will be competing for Provincial Slo Pitch titles this coming weekend. Bay D�Espoir Academy in Milltown will host the eight team 3A tournament. Competing in Division A will be J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Bay D�Espoir Academy, Tricentia Academy (Arnold�s Cove) and St. Boniface All Grade (Ramea). Rounding out the field in Division B is Dunne Academy (St. Mary�s), Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), Dorset Collegiate (Pilley�s Island) and Christ the King School (Rushoon).

The tournament begins 8 a.m., Friday morning. A total of 12 round robin games will be played throughout Friday and Saturday morning. The top two teams from each division advance to the playoffs, which are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. The winners of these games face off at 3:30 p.m. to determine the provincial champion.

Botwood Collegiate is the host school for the 8 team 4A Boys Provincial Slo Pitch tournament. Group A teams include Queen Elizabeth High (Foxtrap), Stephenville High, Leo Burke Academy (Bishop�s Falls) and Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista). Teams in Group B include Booth Memorial (St. John�s), Corner Brook High, Botwood Collegiate and Roncalli High (Avondale).

Games get underway 1 p.m., Thursday and continue throughout Friday on the upper and lower fields in Botwood. The top teams from each division compete in the semi-finals at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., Saturday morning. The championship game is set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the team sportsmanship banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner.
