Photography Exhibit Capturing Visual History of the Province Opens at The Rooms

The Holloways: Newfoundland's First Family of Photography provides the public with a rich visual history of the province. Presented by The Rooms Provincial Archives, and curated by professional photographer Manfred Bucheit, The Holloways exhibit draws together an exquisite collection of photographs of the province from the turn of the twentieth century. The images now provide a framework for our historic culture, offering dramatic visual reference points to the fishery, Newfoundlands place in World War I, as well as the sealing industry and its significant human toll.

"The Holloways images are invaluable historic references that beautifully speak to a specific time and place in our provincial history," commented Greg Walsh, director, The Rooms Provincial Archives. "Their images allow us an insight into our past; images we would not have if it were not for the Holloways keen ability to capture distinguishing historical moments with skill, accuracy and photographic artistry."

The Holloways represents the work of Robert E. Holloway, educator, scientist and amateur photographer; son Bert Holloway, WWI solider and professional photographer; and daughter Elsie Holloway, Newfoundland's first professional female photographer.

The Holloways: Newfoundland's First Family of Photography will remain on display throughout the remainder of 2007.
