Interim Director Announced for The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery

Dean Brinton, CEO of The Rooms Corporation, today announced the appointment of Ms. Megan Davis Williams as Interim Director of The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery. Ms. Davis Williams will officially begin her post on September 4, 2007.

Ms. Davis Williams replaces the permanent director, Dr. Shauna McCabe, who is on a one-year leave of absence pursuing work as a Canada Research Chair in Critical Theory in the Interpretation of Culture at Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick.

"Ms. Davis Williams brings a wealth of experience to this position and a vast knowledge of the dynamic nature of cultural institutions such as The Rooms," said Mr. Brinton. "She has a reputation as a strong leader and advocate in the arts community, and has extensive experience in arts and cultural policy. She will be a great asset to The Rooms over the coming months."

Ms. Davis Williams held positions with the Ottawa Art Gallery as Acting Director (2004-2005) and acted as Director of the Canadian Conference of the Arts (1998-2004). Currently, Ms. Davis Williams sits as a steering committee member for the International Network for Cultural Diversity; a board member for the Friends of South African theatrical productions; as well as the secretary to the Governing Council for the Royal Academy of Canadian Arts.

BACKGROUNDER

Megan Davis Williams

From 1992 through 1998, Ms. Davis Williams worked as a program officer for the Department of Canadian Heritage. Prior to that position, she was employed as a program officer with the Canada Council for the Arts from 1983 through 1992.

As a consultant, Ms. Davis Williams continues to work with the Khyber Centre for the Arts based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Other institutions she has worked with include Dancers Transition Resource Centre based in Toronto, Ontario; CARFAC, Canadian Artists Representation based in Ottawa, Ontario; as well as Foreign Affairs Canada.

Ms. Davis Williams has previously sat on the Arts and Contemporary Studies Advisory Committee (Ryerson University), acted as Director for the Governor General�s Performing Arts Awards Foundation; as well as been a member of the Cultural Statistics Advisory Committee.

Ms. Davis Williams has completed degrees in Liberal and Fine Arts at Concordia University and Mus�e de Beaux Arts in Montreal, Quebec, in addition to a degree in Linguistics from Memorial University. She has also completed a weaving certificate through the Corner Brook Vocational School and an apprenticeship as a Master Weaver in Copenhagen, Denmark.
