Minister Announces $248,208 in Arts and Heritage Funding The development of Newfoundland and Labrador cultural industries continues with an investment of $248,208 for arts and heritage initiatives under the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP). "By supporting these worthwhile projects we are growing and developing cultural industries," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "This is a key direction contained in year two of our cultural plan Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture, a $17.6 million three-year strategy to promote and preserve the province�s culture and heritage. This government remains firmly committed to developing cultural industries in communities across Newfoundland and Labrador and to keeping our creative talent in the province." Under the CEDP program, government will invest a total of $2.15 million this year to assist with the development of arts and heritage initiatives across the province. The arts sector will receive support for operations, marketing, professional development and export for cultural products. The heritage sector will receive support to assist with conservation, presentation and interpretation of heritage resources, as well as professional development for heritage professionals. CEDP projects were selected on the strength of business plans, artistic vision and potential for development within a specific sector. Presentation Congregation Archives
Twillingate Museum Association �
$2,678 to preserve the local newspaper The Twillingate
Sun through digitization. This is a partnership between the museum,
the Maritime History Archive and the Digital Archives Project at
Memorial University to increase the accessibility of the collection.
Funding is also being provided for the purchase of conservation supplies
that will preserve the collection for future generations. Basilica Museum � $2,175 to
create interpretive panels and a virtual exhibit focused on the
Basilica�s annual Nativity scene exhibit. The exhibit has become a
popular winter tradition in St. John�s, displaying over 100 nativity
scenes from all over the world.
Agricultural Society of Newfoundland & Labrador
- $4,000 to continue research on Century Farms in the province. The
Century Farm program recognizes farms that have been in operation by the
same family for 100 years or more. Petit Nord Nature and Heritage Society
� $3,305 to develop a professional exhibit focusing on the work of the
photographer Paul Emile Miot. Miot was an officer of the French navy who
took some of the earliest photographs of Atlantic Canada.
Town of Placentia � $10,000
to support the development of the town�s rich archaeological potential,
including the dig at Fort Louis which dates to the mid-1700s.
Interpretive panels and storyboards will be researched and produced for
the site. Brigus Historical and Conservation Society
� $1,700 to document the traditional paths and right of ways in Brigus
and preserve them for the enjoyment of town residents and visitors.
Sunny Cottage Heritage Centre
� $2,000 to research resettlement in the Harbour Breton area. This
research will be used to develop an exhibit that will help tell a more
complete story of resettlement in the area. Smallwood Era Development Corp
� $2,300 to research the history of Middle Brook and Mint Brook and link
these sites into the larger heritage initiative within the Gambo region.
The research will be compiled into interpretive panels and placed at
historic sites.
Exploits Valley Heritage Society
- $1,500 to assist in the cost of printing an Exploits Heritage Passport
for the 13 heritage sites between Norris Arm, Leading Tickles and
Buchans. This site collaboration will encourage increased visitation and
encourage visitors to stay longer in the area. Mushuau Innu First Nation -
$7,500 to facilitate discussions and planning sessions in Natuashish
around the traditions and cultural heritage of the Band.
Festival 500 - $50,000
towards the production of the 6th Festival 500 Sharing the
Voices, a choral festival and academic symposium that brings
together singers, conductors and scholars from cultures worldwide. Tramore Productions -
$10,000 towards the production of its 2007 summer theatre festival
located in Cuslett, Placentia Bay. Tramore Productions was established
in 1999 as a vehicle to preserve the unique cultural heritage of the
Cape Shore and Placentia Bay through theatrical productions.
The Nickel Independent Film Festival
- $10,000 towards its 2007 annual film festival, which showcases and
promotes the work of local, Canadian and foreign independent filmmakers
to the broader community. St. John�s Jazz Festival -
$20,000 towards its 2007 summer festival, which offers jazz and world
music to the public through a number of live performances.
iDance Irish Dance - $5,000
towards the presentation of a series of dance workshops with renowned
Irish dancer, Michael Donnellan, in St. John�s, July 2007. Downhome Publishing - $8,000
towards the development, production and distribution of its 2007 gift
guide, a 32-page catalogue that includes clothing, crafts, music,
literature, d�cor, jewelry, DVD video, foods and souvenirs. It features
over 250 artists and has a distribution of over 40,000.
Tuckamore Festival - $6,000
towards a marketing plan aimed at promoting the August 2007 chamber
music festival for young and professional artists. V�hicule Press - $2,900
towards a Canadian west coast promotional tour for Newfoundland Labrador
poet Mary Dalton for her new book, Red Ledger.
Beyond the Overpass
Theatre Company - $20,000 towards the production of its 2007 Seabird
Theatre Festival. Beyond the Overpass was established in 1998 to present
performances at the Barbour Historic Village in Newtown, Bonavista Bay.
Winterset in Summer Literary Festival
- $3,000 towards the presentation of its sixth annual
literary festival held in Eastport August 10-12, 2007.
Neighborhood Dance Works -
$15,000 towards 2007-08 programming, including cornerstone event, the
Festival of New Dance. Stephenville Theatre Festival
- $25,000 towards its 2007 season. The theatre festival
that has been operating in Stephenville since 1979 to produce works of
theatre in the classical and contemporary repertoire, with special
emphasis on musical theatre.
Placentia Area Theatre d�Heritage
- $10,000 towards the production of its 2007 summer season. Placentia
Area Theatre d�Heritage, which was established in 1993, celebrates the
unique history and cultural heritage of Plaisance and area through
theatre. Dance Party of Newfoundland
- $3,060 towards performance by four members of the comedy group at the
New York SketchFest in June 2007.
Nanobody Productions -
$4,250 towards attendance at the Banff NextMEDIA Conference in Banff,
June 2007, to market Nanobody�s new media product NANOBODZ�. Wonderbolt Productions �
$5,220 towards professional development activities and the development
and distribution of new promotional materials.
Cape St. Mary�s Performance Series Federation des Francophone de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador - $10,000 towards administration of the French Cultural Network, which assists the province�s Francophone artists and artisans.
