Media Advisory: Minister to Make Announcement on Cupids400 Celebrations

Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister the Honourable Tom Hedderson will be at the United Church Hall in Cupids, Wednesday, June 20, at 11:00 a.m. to make an announcement concerning Cupids400 celebrations in 2010.

In August 1610, Cupids became the site of the first English colony in what is now Canada. 2010 marks the 400th anniversary of that historic event. The history of Cupids, or Cupers Cove as it was originally known, is well-documented through letters, diaries and the discovery of the remains of four 17th century buildings and over 120,000 artefacts. The John Guy 1610 plantation site has been identified by The Beaver: Canadas History Magazine as one of the 10 most important archaeology sites in Canada.

When launched in March 2006, the provinces cultural plan, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture, outlined polices and directions to preserve, support and develop cultural resources. This included the allocation of $300,000 to the Cupers Cove Heritage Foundation to assist with planning for the 400th anniversary of Cupids.
