Minister Announces Appointments to
Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council

A visual artist and craftsperson in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and a pianist/musicologist in St. Johns are the latest appointments to the board of the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council ((NLAC).

The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced the appointment of Barbara Wood and Tom Gordon today. Both appointments are for a three-year term. NLAC board members represent individuals whose expertise is necessary to fulfill the goals and objectives of the council.

"Ms. Wood and Mr. Gordon are strong contributors to the arts in their respective communities and it is my pleasure to welcome them to the board." said Minister Hedderson. "I look forward to working with the members of the board of directors as they continue to implement their strategic plan while promoting and supporting our artists who contribute so much to the social and economic well-being of Newfoundland and Labrador."

In addition to being a self-employed producer of fine crafts, Ms. Wood teaches visual art and crafts at the College of the North Atlantic. Mr. Gordon is Director of the School of Music at Memorial University of Newfoundland and has an eclectic range of interests that stretch from musical life in nineteenth-century Newfoundland and Labrador to the early twentieth-century in France.

Other members of the NLAC board include: John Doyle, St. Johns (film); Charlotte Jones, Corner Brook (visual arts); Margaret Best, St. Johns (visual arts); Carmelita McGrath, St. Johns (literary arts); Mara Noftall, St. Johns (dance); Kim Wiseman, Gander (music); Mary Walsh, St. Johns (theatre); Brent Meade (government representative) and Eleanor Dawson (government representative).

The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council was established in January 1980. The mandate of the NLAC is to foster the arts of the province, the key vehicle by which government supports the creative process. In launching its cultural plan Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture in 2006, the Provincial Government announced it would double the annual budget of the NLAC within three years to $1.8 million.
